A new on-demand transport service in Iceland

We’re delighted to have contributed to the introduction of the first on-demand transport service in Iceland.

The on-demand service is part of the strategies linked to the Keflavík Airport Area masterplan, which was developed by a multidisciplinary team led by KCAP, involving MIC-HUB and other international partners.

As mobility consultants, MIC-HUB proposed intertwined networks on the regional and local scale to connect the airport area to urban nodes. Key points of this strategy are the interchange with local bus lines and an on-demand DRT system (Demand Responsive Transit) that will ensure the Reykjavík-Keflavík link’s integration with communities in Suðurnes and minimise walking distances.

The Routing Company (TRC) will provide on-demand transport around Keflavík International Airport, together with the Icelandic national operator Bus4U from the beginning of June 2024. TRC is a global on-demand vehicle routing and management platform that partners with cities to power the future of public transit.

Keflavík International Airport is Iceland’s largest airport and a major international transportation hub, employing significant numbers of people in the region. The new service provides on-demand home-to-work transportation for over 2,000 employees, improving the daily commuting experience through flexible and responsive buses while reducing private car use and pollution.

The masterplan has been developed by a multidisciplinary team led by KCAP including MIC-HUB, WSP, Felixx, VSO Consulting, Buck Consultants International, Buro Happold, Base Design, Maurits Schaafsma and Kanon Arkitektar.
