The Municipality of Milan has adopted the Implementation Plan for the ‘ARIA Ex-Macello’ project

The transformation of the ARIA Ex-Macello area is entering a new phase. With the adoption of the Implementation Plan, the creation of a new neighbourhood is beginning to take shape, with the aim of returning one of the city’s most iconic places to the urban fabric.

The approximately 150,000 sqm site, which is an example of industrial heritage and has been abandoned and unused for years, has remained on the margins of urban life. The ARIA Ex-Macello project is an extraordinary opportunity for transformation and regeneration, intertwining historical memory with high-quality public spaces and new ways of experiencing the city.

Launched within the framework of the C40 Reinventing Cities international competition in 2019, the Near SGR project was developed by architecture studios Snøhetta, Barreca & La Varra and Stantec, in collaboration with the social housing foundation Fondazione Housing Sociale and a group of international partners, including MPartner, MIC-HUB, AG&P and J+S.

This shared vision will guide the rebirth of an iconic Milanese location, transforming it into a new, open, sustainable and connected neighbourhood.

For MIC-HUB, participating in this process is an exceptional opportunity to contribute expertise and design vision to a transformation that will affect not only physical spaces, but also how people live, move through and experience these places.

As part of the project team, MIC-HUB has developed an accessibility study, mobility strategies and a traffic impact analysis, as well as coordinating and designing the primary urbanisation works.

ARIA Ex-Macello represents a fresh approach to urban planning, integrating infrastructure, mobility, landscape and public spaces into a cohesive design. It is a neighbourhood where connections create opportunities, open spaces encourage interaction, and mobility is a vital component in making the city more accessible, sustainable and inclusive.

Taking part in this transformation means contributing to Milan’s future and helping to regenerate a historic place for a new era defined by openness, relationships, and urban quality.
