The new Piazza Cordusio in Milan is now open
Following a six-month construction phase, the new Piazza Cordusio was inaugurated today. The project involved redesigning a total of 6,000 sqm across the square, Via Cordusio and the final stretch of Via Dante.
Designed by Freyrie Flores Architettura, MIC-HUB and Esa Engineering, the regeneration project restores clarity and order to one of the most symbolic junctions in the historic centre. It expands pedestrian areas by 1,100 sqm and restores the original ellipse conceived by Beltrami.
The new layout also introduces several planted areas that will offer seasonal blooms, despite the constraints posed by the underground metro infrastructure.
The square now features 28 granite benches, four of which bear engraved quotations from Manzoni, Verri, Parini and Grossi, references that serve as markers of orientation and urban memory.
Next to the ATM canopy, a new ground marker indicates the precise point from which three of Milan’s most iconic monuments align: the Duomo, the Castello Sforzesco and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.
The new Piazza Cordusio is a more accessible and well-equipped public space that is easier to recognise. It has been designed to enhance pedestrian mobility and the historical identity of Milan’s city centre.
