A new look Piazza Cordusio has reopened

Following six months of construction work, the new Piazza Cordusio was inaugurated today. The project involved redesigning a total of 6,000 sqm across the square, Via Cordusio and the last part of Via Dante.

Designed by Freyrie Flores Architettura, MIC-HUB and Esa Engineering, the regeneration project restores clarity and order to one of the most iconic intersections in the historic centre. It expands pedestrian areas by 1,100 sqm and restores the original ellipse conceived by Beltrami.

The new layout also introduces several flower beds to display seasonal blooms, despite the constraints posed by the underground metro infrastructure.

The square now features 28 granite benches, four of which bear engraved quotations from Manzoni, Verri, Parini and Grossi that serve as orientation markers and references of urban memory.

Next to the ATM canopy, a circular ground marker indicates the precise point from which three of Milan’s most iconic monuments align: the Duomo, Castello Sforzesco and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

The new Piazza Cordusio is a more distinctive, accessible and better organised public space. It has been designed to enhance pedestrian mobility and restore the historical identity of Milan’s city centre.

The project returns an important urban space to pedestrians and sustainable mobility, integrating green areas and a renewed sense of place.
