Transport Planning: from Theory to Practice, Politecnico di Milano – Third Edition

We are delighted to announce the 2025 edition of “Transport Planning: From Theory to Practice”, the annual workshop curated by MIC-HUB’s City Futures Department at Politecnico di Milano.

Over the course of one week, students will critically engage with contemporary challenges in mobility planning, focusing on road safety, equity, and accessibility in urban contexts.

The workshop emphasises an equity-driven framework that integrates safe and accessible infrastructure with robust, unbiased data collection and spatial analysis.

Recognising that spatial segregation often excludes vulnerable communities from road safety design, participants will analyse the spatial distribution of accidents and demographic variables to identify systemic inequities in policy and planning.

Data collection and analysis are central components of the workshop. Through studying European and Italian datasets — highlighting Milan as a case study — students will analyse road accident data alongside socio-economic factors such as income, age, gender, trip purpose and vehicle speed.

The workshop will acknowledge the potential of digital technologies such as IoT (Internet of Things) applications, AI tools, and traffic monitoring systems to increase road safety, focusing on spatial design and equitable policy as essential elements in reducing fatalities.

Through lectures, discussions, and applied exercises, participants will critically evaluate current urban conditions and suggest evidence-based strategies for redesigning the urban context in line with sustainable and equitable mobility goals.

Where: Politecnico di Milano

When: 8-12 September, 2025

The workshop is conducted in Italian and English.

The workshop is open to students enrolled in the Mobility Engineering course at Politecnico di Milano, and to any Politecnico students interested in the topic of urban mobility.
