Refurbishment of Via Santa Margherita and Piazza Ferrari, Milan

This refurbishment project has created a high-quality, safe pedestrian area in the heart of Milan’s historic centre.
Via Santa Margherita and Piazza Paolo Ferrari connect some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Duomo, Teatro alla Scala and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Via Santa Margherita is also Milan's oldest roadway, retaining its original alignment along the Roman Cardo Maximus, which extended from the Forum to the city gate.
The project involves the redevelopment of Via Santa Margherita together with Piazza Paolo Ferrari and Passaggio Malagodi. Existing conditions at the start of the project were deemed inadequate for such central urban locations.
Piazza Paolo Ferrari, named after the 19th century playwright, has a historic shape and serves as a privileged access point to Teatro Filodrammatici.
These street corridors were redeveloped by Freyrie Flores Architettura and MIC-HUB as part of the broader regeneration project of the historic building at Via Santa Margherita 11, developed by Ardian.

Our contribution
The public realm regeneration project has created a more liveable and safer city space for its residents by expanding the pedestrian areas and reorganising vehicular traffic.
Works included widening the pavements on both sides of Via Santa Margherita, removing parking spaces to eliminate the 'wall' of parked motorcycles and cars, upgrading the pavements by replacing asphalt with paving stones to ensure coherence and continuity with the historic city centre surfaces, and redesigning street furniture to guarantee universal accessibility.
The area in front of the historic Teatro Filodrammatici in Piazza Ferrari has been upgraded and made fully pedestrianised by removing motorcycle parking and creating space for theatre audiences and public use.
Passaggio Malagodi, which connects Via Santa Margherita with Piazza Paolo Ferrari, has also been upgraded by replacing the asphalt with new paving and introducing improved lighting in order to restore dignity and quality to the area.
By improving the pedestrian experience, the regeneration project has effected a sustainable transformation in the heart of Milan.
