Feasibility study for the electrification of Genoa’s urban public transport fleet
Genoa, Italy

MIC-HUB supported Enel X S.r.l. in conducting a feasibility study for the electrification of key public transport lines in Genoa, marking a significant step in the city’s transition towards sustainable mobility.
The study included determining the size of the electric fleet needed to replace vehicles with internal combustion engines, as well as calculating the electric power required at the depots for the sheltering and overnight charging of the electric buses.
The study was based on the current configuration of the local public transport network and certain development proposals set out in the Municipality of Genoa's SUMP, paying particular attention to the 'Main Axes’, which are high-demand corridors.

Our contribution
The initial work carried out by MIC-HUB determined a core set of bus lines to be electrified. This initial cluster included a mix of strategic routes, spanning central and eastern sectors of Genoa’s public transport network.
The analysis identified the characteristics, commercial speed and fleet requirements of the lines to ensure a regular service.
Given the diversity of the lines, MIC-HUB defined the characteristics for the most suitable electric vehicles, taking into account the complex orography of the Genoa area, which directly affects battery performance and autonomy.
Calculations on the sizing of the electric fleet, depot spaces and charging infrastructure were supported by advanced vehicle shift simulations for each line, and by weighing up the expected economic and environmental benefits.
In support of the electrification plan, MIC-HUB proposed specific changes aimed at remodelling the network structure as well as the services offered by the new electrified lines.
