Arcipelago Italia is the theme of the Italian Pavilion at the Biennale Architettura 2018, it has opened its doors to the public unveiling the story of the Internal Territories of our country. The project is a vision by: MIC-HUB + Prof. Marco Ponti.

The majority of these territories are projected towards a future of abandonment and dispersion. In the view of Mario Cucinella – the Curator, “Archipelago Italia is a manifesto that points to possible ways forward for the revival of the interior territories, to restore value and importance to architecture and because the work of the architect must reclaim a role of social responsibility”.

To answer the question “what does the future hold for these territories?” and to help with this framework, mic-hub has proudly supported the curator Mario Cucinella, his team and the rich multitude of experts, architects, and academics who put their energy in envisioning a different future for these lands and their people, in shaping the vision for the future of mobility in Italy.

The” Sala Futuro” offered an interactive interface with a role to enable the real-time visualization and the understanding of mic-hub’s description of the Italian transportation framework in 2050 in comparison to the one we have today at a national scale.

Our contribution

For decades it has been thought that the economic growth of a territory was strictly related to the construction of new infrastructures. In recent years, however, it has been highlighted that the two factors, in highly infrastructured western contexts, such as Italy, are not necessarily related.

MIC-HUB, for the territories of the Archipelago, has imagined a future that does not find in the variable speed, the single indicator of the goodness of the mobility system.

The vision proposed for the Biennale is based on two axioms:

- The rail network does not require further enchantments or radical technologic changes, but should be reviewed with a view to enhancing and optimizing what already exists.

- The rail network does not require further enchantments or radical technologic changes, but should be reviewed with a view to enhancing and optimizing what already exists.

The concepts of multifunctionality, flexibility of use and redistribution of space to prove to be resilient to future needs and solutions, have been applied in a natural way both to the architectural space and to the mobility.

MIC-HUB has thus imagined a strategic framework that on a national scale supports the relaunch of the areas of the Archipelago Italia, minimizing the construction of new infrastructures to reduce both the costs and the impact on the environment and territory, while guaranteeing equitable and inclusive mobility in areas currently characterized by low levels of accessibility.
