The Cinque Terre National Park Authority commissioned a study on tourist mobility flows to initiate a design process for managing visitor flows within the park. The study aimed to provide an unprecedented overview of tourism mobility patterns towards the park and propose design solutions to manage visitor flows, mediate organised tour groups and improve the overall visitor experience.

Due to the park's topological configuration, tourist activity is highly concentrated in certain areas. It is estimated that visitors tend to cluster within 3-4% of the park's total area across trails and villages, which raises critical issues related to visitor concentrations and the current dispersed nature of the area's offerings.


The study of tourist flows and the related design hypotheses developed by MIC-HUB represent the first step towards a visitor flow management strategy that is aligned with the park's visitor capacity.

Our contribution

By cross-referencing different data sets (such as Cinque Terre card sales and cruise passenger numbers) with other observed or sample data sets (such as weekend counts carried out during the Republic Day weekend in 2023), it was possible to calculate approximately 3.4 million visitor arrivals entering the park throughout 2023. The modal split was also analysed to form a better understanding of how visitor numbers were distributed across the different access modes to the Cinque Terre National Park.

The study's conclusions and proposed solutions form the basis for the operational phase, which was defined during the Cinque Terre Park's General Assembly meeting on sustainable visitor flow management.


The MIC-HUB study provides an in-depth understanding of the site through analysis, statistics and data collected during peak tourism days, outlining innovative scenarios to improve crowd prevention services and visitor management within the park.
