Stories of Voices and Infrastructure
Italy
Stories of Voices and Infrastructure is a research and exhibition project curated by MIC-HUB for the mobility section of La Biennale dello Stretto 2026, which is dedicated to the theme of 'Mutations'.
Offering a perspective on mediterranean mobility in the Strait of Messina that goes beyond a purely engineering and functional approach, the project explores the ongoing transformations in the ways people move.
The project interprets mobility as a cultural, social, and territorial phenomenon, revealing the relationships between people, infrastructure, and landscape.
Through this research, the project invites us to reconsider the role of mobility in shaping contemporary territories.
Transport connectivity, time quality, accessibility, and the relationship with the landscape become complementary dimensions of a broader reflection: how can we design mobility systems that connect places and improve the way we experience them?

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Our contribution
Roads, railways, ports and maritime connections are not just components of a transport network; they are also spaces that are shaped by relationships, memories and everyday practices, and which contribute to the definition of a territory's identity.
The Strait of Messina is a particularly significant place in which to explore these relationships. Traditionally perceived as a barrier separating two shores, the sea becomes a space of connection, crossed by flows and exchanges that reveal a shared territory.
This research project explores this complex geography through three interconnected dimensions: landscape, time and sound. It offers insights into how infrastructure influences the ways in which people inhabit, perceive and move through places.
The project also examines the relationship between mobility and the perception of time, exploring how different travel speeds shape the experience of the landscape. The fast pace of road infrastructure, the continuous nature of the coastal railway and the slower rhythm of maritime crossings all create distinct experiences of the same territory.
The exhibition translates these themes into a narrative journey, bringing together data, territorial representations and perceptions to offer different perspectives on the transformations of the Strait.
